What Exactly is a DA Rating?

Created by Moz, Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score that predicts how likely a website is to rank in search engine result pages (SERPs). A DA rating ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.

How It's Calculated

DA is calculated by combining multiple factors into a single score. These include:

  • Total number of links
  • Linking root domains
  • TrustFlow & Citation metrics

The DA Myth

It's critical to remember: Google does NOT use Domain Authority as a ranking factor. It is a third-party metric used to estimate how Google sees your site.

"Compare yourself to competitors, not to perfection."

What is a "Good" DA Rating?

A "good" DA rating depends entirely on your niche. For example:

  • DA 1-10: New or very niche websites.
  • DA 20-30: Established small business sites.
  • DA 40-50: Industry authorities in smaller niches.
  • DA 60-80: Major national publications and brands.
  • DA 90+: Global giants (Facebook, Wikipedia, etc.).

The best way to judge your rating is to look at the top 5 results for your target keyword. If they all have a DA of 50 and yours is 45, you're in the right ballpark.

DA Rating FAQs

Can I buy a higher DA score?
No. While some services promise to "increase your DA," they often use spammy redirect techniques that might trick the metric but won't help your actual Google rankings. Always focus on genuine authority building.
Why did my DA drop even though I'm building links?
DA is a relative metric. If a major site like Facebook gains 100 million links, the whole scale recalibrates. Even if you gained links, your relative "share" of the total authority might have slightly decreased.
